A new study found that playing dumb is not a bad way to go, but just straight-out asking for a warning is better. Researchers asked people to name various excuses they’ve used, and whether they worked or not.
Here are the excuses from the study that work best.
1. “I didn’t realize I was speeding” works 32% of the time. This is the most common excuse used.
2. “I’m late for work.” This is just 20% successful.
3. “There’s a medical emergency.” Also 20%.
4. “I really have to use the bathroom.” This seems lame, right? But it still works 17% of the time.
5. The best way to get out of it? Just ask for a warning. That works more than 40% of the time.
