It was 2006 late on Christmas day, I was with a couple of friends around 10 pm ready to call it a night…or so I thought until we saw a flyer for an electronics store that showed some deals for a “boxing day blowout”. At the time I REALLY wanted a digital camera. Never owned one, needed to get one. A few of us were drooling over some of the other deals going on. “Let’s do it, let’s go over get in line” figuring we would be well ahead in line if we got there nearly 10 hours before the doors open. No biggie, it’s only minus 30 out without the wind chill, let’s do it!
In retro spec, there was no point because there was already a massive line but we stayed anyway. I made sure to park my car nearby and kept it running all night to keep the heat going as we needed it. There were four of us and so we sat in line with lawn chairs in shifts of two every 30 minutes and switched to the car as a way to keep warm. It was boring, we were tired. By the time the store opened we plenty of time to think how ridiculous this idea was but we had been in line for so long anyway so we stayed.
Finally, the store opens and pushed through the people through the door (I miss the pre-covid days) I got to my digital camera. Only to find out they had a TON of them and to find it was refurbished. By the time all was said and done…I saved 50 bucks.
So when I read stories like this guy waiting 36 hours for a game counsel and manages to grab one of the only two in the store. I say..Rock on good sir, rock on. I live vicariously through people like this guy.
Tyler Lopez got to @GameStop at 8pm on WEDNESDAY to be first in line for the PS5. The doors just opened here — and he got it! One of only two sold at this location. #BlackFriday pic.twitter.com/MHA6I039cr
