This wildfire season in Saskatchewan has quickly escalated into one of the most severe in recent memory. With 26 communities and parks now under evacuation orders, it’s not just about flames on the horizon—it’s about families being uprooted, homes left behind, and entire communities facing the unknown.
The Shoe Fire alone has scorched more than 407,000 hectares, stretching the efforts of emergency crews and volunteers to their limits. Roads are closing, resources are being reallocated in real-time, and for many, life has been turned upside down overnight.
There are currently 20 active wildfires, and while five are reported as contained, the danger is far from over. The Saskatchewan Public Safety Agency has confirmed more than 160 property losses, a heartbreaking toll for those affected. These are not just numbers—they’re homes, businesses, and memories.
What’s been encouraging, though, is the incredible show of support. Firefighters from across the country—and even from Alaska and Oregon—have stepped in to help. That kind of solidarity reminds us that in times of crisis, we’re never truly alone.
Still, for those in the thick of it, this is a time of uncertainty. If you’re planning a trip through the north or heading out for a weekend adventure, please check conditions first. And if it feels right, maybe swap that camping trip for a backyard fire pit night at home—safe, smoky-free, and just a little more grounded.
And to those who have opened their homes, made donations, or simply checked in on friends and neighbours—thank you. It’s your kindness that helps keep the spark of hope alive, even on the smokiest days.
